Background Information

The San Leandro High School (SLHS) Fred T. Korematsu (FTK) Campus opened in the fall of 2010. During its first year of operation, the SLHS FTK campus experienced unusually strong storms and high rainfall. Several of these storms occurred during the lunch period exceeding the design capacity of the outside seating area?s ability to provide adequate shelter.  Additionally, high wind driven rain infiltrated the kitchen serving window roof overhang surpassing its capability to keep students standing in the lunch line protected from getting wet.

WLC Architects was retained to design and prepare all of the design and construction documents to modify the lunch seating area shelter to increase its efficiency in providing adequate protection for students especially during severe rain storms.  Plans and specifications were approved by the Division of the State Architect (DSA) and the project was bid through the requirements of Public Contract Code.

On May 8, 2012, the District conducted a formal sealed bid opening process, per State of California Public Contract Code requirements, for the Fred T. Korematsu Lunch Shelter Upgrade Project.

Three (3) bids were received for the project.  GECO, Inc. was the lowest responsive, responsible bid, and the Board approved the construction contract with GECO, Inc. on June 5, 2012.

This Final Change Order (CO) #1in the amount of $11,568  is approximately a 4.28% increase to the prior construction contract amount of $270,000  The new contract sum including this change order will be $281,568.

13. ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS FROM BOARD MEMBERS-7:40 p.m.
Minutes:

Trustee Carey attended the last San Leandro High School football game of the season and was happy that they won.

Trustee Katz-Lacabe commented that his 5th grade daughter said that she read in her history book about Christopher Columbus sailing to America to prove "that the earth wasn't flat.  He suggested that the District look at some of the material that is in the history book because what concerns him is that with all the challenges we face educating our children, actually giving them information that is not true should not be one of them. Following his comments, Trustee Prola said she would like to look into this with Trustee Katz-Lacabe stating that history book was from the Houghton-Mifflin series - 5th grade.

Trustee Sullivan wished "Good Luck" to Trustees Mack-Rose and Almonte on their race for City Council seats tonight.

Trustee Almonte thanked the grandparent for bringing his concerns to the Board.

Trustee Mack-Rose asked and received consensus to cancel the December 18 Board meeting. With two meetings scheduled for December 4 and December 11, staff does not feel it will be necessary to hold the meeting. She said that on December 4, the new Trustees will be installed; however, will not be taking office until the December 11 meeting where the Board will be considering approving the First Interim Report.  She will be inviting new members to the December 3 Finance Committee meeting, so that they will have at least a week to digest the information of the First Interim.

Superintendent Cathey reminded outgoing Trustees Almonte, Mack-Rose, and Sullivan to invite family and friends to the reception honoring them at the Special Board meeting on November 13, at the District Office at 6:15 p.m.  Open session begins at 7:00 p.m. with the closed session to follow.
