| Approve the contract between the All Green Recycling and the San Leandro Unifed School District for E-Waste Event at John Muir Middle School |
The John Muir Middle School Band and Orchestra has been scheduled to perform in Disneyland on May 16-18, 2013 as part of Disney Magic Music Days program. John Muir Middle School has sent its band and orchestra every other year beginning in 2006. This is John Muir's third trip to Disneyland to perform or participate in a musical workshop with a Disney music director. During its Disney performance year, parents and students stage fundraiser events to offset or lessen the cost of the trip per student. The cost of this year's voluntary trip is $450.00 per student and covers transportation, admission, accommodations, Disney performance DVD and materials.
John Muir has several fundraiser events planned for the year. One of the projected biggest fundraiser events John Muir would like to offer is the E-waste collection event which is designed to promote environmental awareness and responsible recycling and at the same time raise funds for the JMMS Disneyland performance trip. JMMS Band and Orchestra are sponsoring this E-waste collection event in partnership with the complany ALL GREEN RECYCLING. This event is scheduled for March 2-3, 2013.
ALL GREEN will:
- Complete set up and breakdown of event
- Provide accidental and liability insurance
- Provide for removal of materials from vehicles
- Provide packaging and removal of all materials from site
- Transport materials to their facility for domestic recycling
John Muir Middle School band and orchestra parent volunteers will:
- Promote the event district wide and community wide
- Direct and monitor traffic of vehicles through to the designated e-waste drop-off zones in the site parking lot
- Manage and coordinate the signing in and recording of donors and donations as they drop off their E-waste
John Muir Middle School requests that it be allowed to ask district departments and schools to submit their discard list to the School Board prior to this event so that they can drop off their E-waste at John Muir Middle School by March 2-3, 2013.
District staff will work with JMMS and ALL GREEN to ensure health and safety including personnel time to maintain any facilities such as restrooms that may need to be used during this event.
John Muir Middle School projects maximum proceeds from this event if all district schools and departments participate in this E-waste recycling event.
All net proceeds from this event will benefit the school performance trip to Disneyland in May.
Accounting and auditing of the proceeds of this fundraising event will be the responsibility of the John Muir Middle School band and orchestra fundraising team and the school.
The terms of the contract with All Green are attached. |

These items are submitted for advance planning and to assist the Board in establishing future agenda items. The Board may, however, take action on the following: |

| Cindy M. Cathey, Superintendent |

The Board reviewed and discussed selection process options for hiring a new Superintendent and provided staff direction on how to best proceed.
Dr. John Thompson, Senior Director II, Human Resources, explained that the Board has the following options for selecting a new superintendent and walked the Board through the advantages and disadvantages to each of the following selection methods:
- Appoint someone: either an internal candidate or someone from the "outside"
- Conduct a district-led search
- Use an outside firm to conduct a search
President Prola requested and received Board consensus of the Board to use an outside firm to conduct a search. After some discussion, it was decided that:
- Dr. Thompson will forward 2 additional search proposals (for a total of 5) to the Board for review by the end of the week, a Superintendent Search Firm Comparison chart, and possible interview questions
- The Board will rank each proposal from 1-5 with 1 being the highest and 5 being the lowest, identifying the top three firms to meet with the Board on February 26 for an interview/presentation in open session
- The Board agreed to start the open session on February 26 at 6:30 p.m. (to accommodate the interview/presentations), with the Board recessing into closed session following the open session
Before moving on to the work session, the Board took a short break. |
The Board will review and discuss selection process options for hiring a new Superintendent and provide staff direction on how to best proceed. |
| With the retirement of Superintendent Cindy M. Cathey, the Board of Education will discuss and consider the steps to be taken to seek her replacement. The District has the fiduciary responsibility to the public to perform an above satisfactory ?search? for the best possible candidates for the position of Superintendent. Staff has explored the process used in neighboring districts. The use of a search firm to manage the process is one option commonly used among districts looking for a highly qualified superintendent. The Board will discuss their selection process options, consider whether or not to seek the services of a search firm and provide staff direction for how to proceed.
