5. PUBLIC TESTIMONY ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS
Minutes:
Leticia Alvarez, addressed the Board regarding the lengthy (over 40 days) of her son's teacher this school year. She expressed her frustration that while her son has been in class every day, and she has done her part as a parent, she is being asked to provide tutoring for her son, which would cause a hardship for her. She feels that her son has missed out on his whole year of school, and as a parent she is out of options. Tom Epenberger, whose child is in the same class as Ms. Alvarez's son, shared the same concerns, stating that only recently have parents been given a real action plan by the school site. Up until then there seemed to be a lack of planning or preparation for when a situation like this occurs, adding that it does not seem fair to ask parents to take their child out of extracurricular after-school activities and provide tutoring to make up for the time lost. Mr. Epenberger felt that the District and school site has essentially failed the students this year and asked that a solution be put in place to insure that this doesn't happen again. Richard Chullent, John Muir PTO president, addressed the Board on two issues: (1) His disappointment of the lack of acknowledgement of the many Special Education parents who came to the meeting urging the Board to consider their concerns before taking action on the recommended adjustments to Special Education Programming for the 2015-2016 school year; and (2) Mr. Chullent acknowledged Trustee Gonzalez for serving breakfast to the Muir teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, and on behalf of the John Muir PTO, presented Trustee Gonzalez with a "Thank You" gift.

TO:

Minutes:
Dr. John Thompson prefaced the presentation by explaining that earlier this year, the District entered into a contract with Educational Management Solutions (EMS) to perform a classification and compensation study to review the job classifications and salary schedule structures for classified and management employee groups. While he said that it was good practice to have a study every five years, the last one completed by the District was in 1990. Dr. Thompson then introduced Larry Hunt, from EMS, who explained that the study included a development of findings with recommendations that addresses both the internal equity and market competitiveness of the District's current compensation practices and can serve as the foundation for future decisions regarding wage and salary administration. Mr. Hunt concluded his presentation by saying that they have outlined a process that identifies steps that will be required to fully implement the Study's recommendations, adding that EMS can further assist the District in the development of an Implementation Plan and ensuring job information and compensation practices are maintained in accordance with "best practices." The Board thanked Mr. Hunt for the presentation.

Background Information
Since the 2010-11 school year the SLUSD District Office has implemented a four consecutive day workweek schedule during the summer recess period when most of our schools are closed. This year staff is recommending that the school board approve a resolution authorizing a four consecutive day workweek schedule for the period of June 19, 2015, through August 7, 2015, with the exception of the week of June 29 - July 3, 2014, which will be a regular workweek due to the Fourth of July Holiday. The following benefits are associated with this schedule: 1) It will reduce cost to the District in that utilities will only be used four days of the week instead of five days of the week; 2) It will provide an additional opportunity for employees to use accrued vacation time during a day when the district office is closed; and 3) It will provide a savings to our employees in that they will only have to provide transportation to work on a four day per week basis instead of five days per week. CSEA has signed a memorandum of understanding supporting the four consecutive workweek schedule described above.

Facilities and Technology Committee, May 20, 2015.
Background Information
In order to support 21st century teaching and learning, SLUSD will need to substantially increase the Internet speed that reaches each classroom. At the February and March 2015 Board meetings, Trustees approved the contract with Conterra to connect all SLUSD sites to the San Leandro Dark Fiber Loop (The Loop), and Lynbrook to replace the switches at each site. Replacing the WIFI access points at each site is one of the many technology improvements that will need to occur in order for the high speed Internet to reach every classroom. Staff completed a performance test of three different wifi access points and compared these results to our current wifi. Miraki was determined to be best meet the needs of SLUSD and was the most cost efficient over the expected life of the wifi access points. The Merced contract will be used as the procurement vehicle for this purchase.

12. ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS FROM BOARD MEMBERS
Minutes:
Trustee Rosato asked that staff provide updates on the status of the consensus items so that the Board is aware of those that have been completed and those still needing attention. Trustee Tate visited Garfield Elementary School and had the pleasure of speaking to sixty-four 5th graders about the role of a School Board member, adding that the students are studying civics in class and posed some very tough questions. Trustee Sheridan thanked those who supported Monroe Elementary Schools spring carnival and car show, reporting that it was another successful community-building event. He visited Jefferson Elementary and took a walk through the school with Principal Morales, adding that once a month on Wednesday, there is a morning student recognition assembly. Trustee Gonzales enjoyed cooking breakfast for the John Muir Middle School teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. She attended the "Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead for Education Breakfast" and hosted two tables. She acknowledged the San Leandro Education Foundation (SLED) for putting together a great presentation on behalf of our schools. Trustee Gonzalez attended Bancroft Middle School's production of "Aladdin." Trustee Gonzalez shadowed a para educator in a moderately-severe classroom at Madison Elementary School and attended the school's spring concert. Trustee Gonzalez attended Monroe's school carnival and will be traveling to Disneyland with the San Leandro High School Band, serving as a chaperone. Tomorrow night, May 20, is Season for Service and the Latino Achievement Night, adding that it is the last night for "Relay for Life." She would like staff to explore offering multiple elective opportunities that middle school students can take during the school year. Trustee James reported that the San Leandro High School swim team competed at the NorCal Championship. On Saturday and Sunday, the Ultimate Frisbee Club placed third in their competition, adding that after three-years, there are about thirty students in the club. Trustee Prola reported that she was elected as a Delegate at the California Democratic Delegation in Anaheim, reporting that our Assemblyman Rob Bonta is sponsoring AB1240, which aims to improve student achievement, and health through innovative improvements to school breakfast; and where the Delegates overwhelmingly adopted a resolution urging legislators to require vaccinations for all students except for those students whose medical condition prohibits it. Student Board Member Martin mentioned that teacher absences were also a concern at the high school, stating that in her experience with one of her teachers who was out for an extended period of time, it does affect the students and the classroom environment. Ms. Martin will be attending the Disneyland Band trip, and also reported that she applied for an internship in Assemblymember Rob Bonta's local office. Ms. Martin concluded her comments by saying this was her last meeting, and thanked everyone for their support.
