Richard Chennault announced that John Muir Middle School and their PTSO (Parent Teacher Student Organization) is hosting a Color Run Saturday, April 30, from 10-3.
Louise Shaw, a teacher at Wilson Elementary, began with appreciation that Victoria Forrester, Director, Special Services and her department has a program that has kids who have been with peers for a specific amount of time at their current school continue on with those peers at their transitional schools.
A concern Ms. Shaw expressed concern about a recent benchmark test on Illiuminate. If we're using benchmark tests, then teachers need a guide and calendar so teachers can cover it prior to testing in order for students to be successful. The result was the teachers and students were demoralized. She asked them to rethink the benchmark test for next year.

The District recommends the implementation of the G.R.E.A.T. program in partnership with the San Leandro Police Department for SLUSD fifth grade students. The District is basing its decision to scale implementation of the program at all of its elementary sites on the results of the pilot implementation program conducted at both Garfield and McKinley elementary schools. After these two successful pilots, the District recommends the approval of the program throughout SLUSD. Two more elementary school sites will implement the program this spring. All elementary sites will implement the program in fifth grade starting next school year. This presentation will address the following four topics regarding the G.R.E.A.T program implementation pilot: Share about the process of the pilot programs in 5th grade at Garfield Elementary and McKinley Elementary Reflections from school site staff and student evaluation data Discuss implementation process and expectations moving forward Understand how G.R.E.A.T supplements the work of key initiatives in the district
The G.R.E.A.T. Elementary School Component consists of a competency-based life skills curriculum for fifth grade elementary students. The design of the elementary component aims to establish the foundation for the development of a positive bond between law enforcement and youth. The goal of this component is to prevent youth violence while developing positive relationships between criminal justice professionals and youth during their early developmental years within their community.
The curriculum consists of six 30- to 45-minute lessons designed to be taught in sequence. Each lesson is accompanied by a family letter that the student takes home explaining the lesson and encouraging parent/student interaction. The curriculum consists of the following lessons: - G.R.E.A.T. Beginnings
- Lesson Goal: Students will identify facts about the G.R.E.A.T. Program and various aspects about violence and prevention.
- To Do or Not to Do
- Lesson Goal: Students will demonstrate decision-making skills and identify to whom they can talk if they need help making decisions.
- Loud and Clear
- Lesson Goal: Students will demonstrate effective communication skills.
- Staying Cool When the Heat Is On
- Lesson Goal: Students will practice controlling anger and develop strategies to manage their anger.
- We're All in This Together
- Lesson Goal: Students will identify individual and group differences and discuss respecting others.
- G.R.E.A.T. Days Ahead
- Lesson Goal: Students will identify ways of being a G.R.E.A.T. citizen.

Dr. Rosanna Mucetti, Deputy Superintendent, discussed the results of the implementation of the G.R.E.A.T pilot program that took place at Garfield and McKinley Elementary Schools. Lynda Hornada, Principal of Garfield Elementary, and Grozelia Ward, Principal of McKinley Elementary, were also present and shared reflections of the implementation of this program and the impact at their respective sites. Virginia Quock, a teacher at Garfield Elementary, also shared a few reflections of the program.
After the presentation, President Rosato announced there were three speaker cards regarding this item, which will be voted on as an action item later in the agenda to approve the program for implementation in the other schools.
Mike Katz-Lacabe stated he is a parent of a students at Roosevelt Elementary and Bancroft Middle School. He was very disappointed at the recommendation to expand this program to all 5th grade students and happy to see the true purpose of the program has been acknowledged in the agenda. He felt it was more appropriate for police officers to volunteering in the community rather than be in the classrooms. He believes it is critical for our teachers to have the necessary time and proven curricula to do their jobs. The GREAT program was not developed by education professionals.
Students Camila and Lilah, 5th graders from Roosevelt Elementary School, expressed their opinion on the GREAT program. They don't think the district should have the program because they will lose art and extra curricula activities. Instead, that time can be used to have more music and band time.
Cynthia Chandler, a parent in the district, was really shocked at the positive evaluation of this program. She felt the literature was racist. In her opinion It is disempowering of females in the curriculum and has derogatory racial stereotypes. She will be opting out and encourages other parents to do so and hopes the Board will reconsider their position.
Christine Scobee stated that before you expand this program to other schools, you should ask counselors and certificated teachers to develop a curriculum that meets the program goals rather than police officers who have no particular training in this area. You should be clear about asking the teachers what lessons will be displaced in order to implement this program. What alternative programs exist and why was this program better than any of the alternatives available?

The Board is required to adopt interim financial reports twice each year. The interim reports must include a certification of whether or not the district is able to meet its financial obligations. The certifications are classified as positive, qualified, or negative. A positive certification is assigned when the district will meet its financial obligations for the current and two subsequent fiscal years. Since the enclosed report shows the the district can meet its financial obligations for this year and the next two years, it is recommended that the board adopt a positive certification. Key points in the report are: - Budget balanced for this year and next two years
- ADA is projected to decline at 60 per year for next two years. (This may be revised.)
- Revenue Growth is slowing
- STRS and PERS are taking a larger share of budget
