F. PUBLIC TESTIMONY ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS
Minutes:
Ms. Lisa Rose a teacher from San Leandro Adult School commented on a newspaper article that she appeared in regarding the new coding workshops and classes at the Adult School. Since the newspaper article appeared there is now a waiting list for these classes. Many adults want to learn coding, how to build apps and websites for businesses in the area. She has been in contact with the Links shuttle service which is funded by the Chamber of Commerce Business District and they are not able to make any additional stops. Ms. Rose is asking the Boards support to help her obtain one more stop so that students who take BART can use the shuttle service to attend classes at the Adult School.

Trustee Prola commented that she might have contacts that could help Ms. Rose with the Links shuttle service. She asked Ms. Rose to contact her after the meeting.

Ms. Louise Shaw a teacher from Wilson Elementary School mentioned that she attended the 6th grade orientation with her daughter and it went really well. She contacted Sally Lewis the vice principal at John Muir Middle school regarding some suggestions that she had. One suggestion was having a visual with simple directions on how to open a combination lock. Parents recognized Ms. Shaw as a teacher from Wilson Elementary School and asked for help on opening a combination lock. She also suggested that staff from Muir and Bancroft meet to go over any suggestions made regarding orientation while it is still fresh in their minds.

Ms. Shaw also commented on the Mandatory Forms that were sent home to all parents. She liked that there was a checklist in the middle of the Mandatory Forms. She noticed that the numbering on the checklist and on the front page letter was incorrect. She felt it was a great document but editing is needed prior to next school year. Ms. Shaw also noticed that the Google apps form for students was embedded in the Mandatory Forms and she was concerned as to what parents would think about this, since last year there were some parents who declined to sign this form.

L.1.a. Resolution No. 16-34 Proclaiming September 16-22, 2016, as Constitution Week
Rationale:

September 16-22, 2016 marks the celebration of the 229th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. The United States Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties and freedoms and to ensure those unalienable rights to every American. The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 16-22 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the US Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The aims of the celebration are to:

  • Emphasize citizen's responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution.
  • Inform people that the Constitution is the basis for American's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life.
  • Encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

Constitution Week is a great time to learn more about this important document and celebrate the freedoms it gave us.

L.5. Facilities & Construction
L.5.a. Proposal agreements between San Leandro Unified with Watertight Restoration and Harris & Associates for repairs on the Barbara Lee School and Health Wellness Center
Rationale:

Severe storms this past winter caused flooding and water damage at the Barbara Lee Wellness Center. The dance room threshold was not sealed and water seeped between the floor and sill.  The dance floor was damaged and will need to be replaced once the window sill is sealed.

Another issue also came to light because of the severe storms. The storm drain pipe adjacent to the fence was found to be damaged.   This contributed to flooding of the Barbara Lee Wellness Center.

Project description and proposal amounts are as follows:

Harris & Associates (Project Management Support)

Window sealing (waterproofing)    $  5,120.00

Piping                                             $  6,544.00

(Not to exceed)            Total           $11,664.00

L.5.b. Additional inspection services for fence project on eight sites; Garfield, Roosevelt, Washington, Wilson Elementary Schools, and Bancroft Middle School
Rationale:

As you know these projects had an amended schedule to be completed no later than the end of February 2016. The amended proposal we provided was based on completion by end of March 2016.  We Stretched what hours we had to May 4th. The projects are still not completed and we calculate an additional 200 hours will be needed  to complete the project.

With 152 hours already provided to-date and the balance of 48 hours to complete the on-site work and Project Closeout. The projects duration has been extended for a number of reasons which resulted in twelve CCD's being issued  all need DSA   approval.

Below is our proposal  for additional  inspection  services for the 2015-2016 Fence Projects in  the San Leandro Unified School District. The proposals are based on completing on-site construction and project closeout.

Project  Description  and proposal  amounts are as follows:

Garfield E.S. Part-time coverage           50 hrs X  $85 = $4,250

Roosevelt E.S. Part-time coverage       50 hrs X  $85 = $4,250

Washington E.S. Part-time coverage    50 hrs X  $85 = $4,250

Wilson E.S. Part-time coverage            50 hrs X  $85 = $4,250

Bancroft M.S. Part-time coverage         50 hrs X  $85 = $4,250

Increased Amount  =  $21,250
