E. PRESENTATIONS
E.1. Jefferson Elementary School
Speaker:
Guillermo Morales, Principal
Rationale:
The Storyteller in Me

Jefferson 3rd grade teachers, Guadalupe Gomez and Maira Gomez introduced their students to folktales from around the world.  As part of this unit, they used the Engaged NY lesson focused on how children around the world access books. When students inquired about how authors write stories, the two teachers decided to use this as their driving question in their project based learning unit of study.

Minutes:
Guillermo Morales, principal at Jefferson Elementary spoke briefly on Project Based Learning. He then introduced two of his teachers, Guadalupe Gomez, 3rd grade bilingual teacher and Maira Gomez, third grade teacher. Both teachers and students talked about their project "The Story Teller in Me". They focused on folktales from all around the world. Each student presented information on their project, talked about the type of book they selected, why they selected this book and they each spoke about the most important things that they learned from this project. Each student read their stories aloud and will also be reading their stories to other students at their school and at their school's Open House.
E.2. McKinley Elementary School
Speaker:
Grozelia Ward, Principal
Rationale:

At McKinley, home of the Eagles, we believe students need to grow their academic skills as well as their social emotional skills. We want all of our Eagles to have career options related to STEAM.  As a result, this year we have been  intentional about exposing our youngest Eagles to high quality STEAM teaching and learning experiences. In addition to being innovative, these careers will require students to understand empathy and to collaborate effectively.  Therefore, our  intermediate students are being supported and encouraged to take a critical role in establishing and maintaining positive relationships on our campus. Mrs. Ullrich, Kindergarten teacher, will present our STEAM studio and student leaders will explain Toolbox Tuesday and the ABC Club. All of these serve as initiatives that support our students in their socio-emotional development and their proficiency in the innovation schools required for a successful future.

Minutes:
Grozelia Ward, principal at McKinley Elementary School introduced some of her fourth grade leaders and Ms. Ullrich, kindergarten teacher. She announced that McKinley and Washington Elementary Schools turned 100 years old. She highlighted three items that they were going to present tonight; STEAM Studio, Toolbox Tuesday and ABC Anti Bullying Club. Ms. Ullrich spoke about this years full day Kindergarten schedule and how they were very excited and also challenged on how to maximize this additional time they were given. A spare portable was available and it was converted into their STEAM Studio. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math, Movement and Music. Ms. Ullrich talked about their STEAM activities. Ms. Ward spoke about Toolbox Tuesday and how her fourth and fifth grade students take the lead on teaching other students how to apply these tools in their classroom, playground and in their home settings. Students performed a typical Toolbox Tuesday day at their school. Ms. Ward also spoke about the ABC Anti-Bullying Club. The founding members of this club introduced themselves and talked about their projects.

E.3. Roosevelt Elementary School
Speaker:
Soraya Sablo-Sutton, Principal
Rationale:

Launching and relaunching programs at Roosevelt School

Roosevelt School has had a tremendous year of launching and relaunching programs to help students become 21st century learners.  We recently transformed our out-dated computer lab into a brand new Science Lab, where every student TK-5 has the opportunity to engage in hands-on, NGSS aligned science instruction.  In addition, all of our teachers are engaging in ongoing professional development to continue to grow their practice around Project Based Learning pedagogy.  Our presentation will highlight the PBL projects happening at 1st grade and 5th grade at Roosevelt School.

Minutes:
Soraya Sablo-Sutton, principal at Roosevelt Elementary School spoke about Project Based Learning (PBL) and how it was implemented several years ago and where they are now with PBL. She also spoke about the new PBL programs that were launched this year, the relaunching of other PBL projects and their new science lab. Every class has implemented and are working on PBL projects. Ms. Sablo-Sutton talked about their outdated computer room and how they launched their new science lab. T-K through fifth grade students utilized this science lab for many different projects and activities. She introduced two of her teachers, Ms. Dodd, first grade teacher and Ms. Valdivia, fifth.

Ms. Dodd, first grade teacher talked about PBL at the first grade level and their project "Good Vibrations". She gave a presentation about sound and how students worked with sound effects. Students final project will be at their schools Open House and each class will perform a play, poetry and animation with sound effects.

Ms. Valdivia, fifth grade teacher talked about a book her class read called "Shooting Kabul"; about an Afghanistan student and photojournalism. She also talked about their PBL project "How can I tell an interesting story that helps people understand my community?" The class came up with a theme "Legendary places in the Bay Area" and came up with over 80 locations. Students had to come up with a subject and determine who was going to help them with this project. A professional photographer came to the school to work with the students and will return to help them with their final projects. As photojournalists their final project is to have an off site photo gallery, sell their photographs and determine where their money will go towards.

E.5. Bancroft Middle School
Speaker:
Valentin del Rio, Principal
Rationale:

Bancroft Middle School staff have been involved in Project Based Learning training during the 16-17 school year. Many teachers are attempting to implement PBL in their classrooms at different rates, however Mr. Asper, our 8th grade science teacher was recently trained and jumped right in. With the announcement of potential travel to Mars, Mr. Asper made a connection to a class egg drop project. Students studied the types of energy involved in travel and had the task to build an apparatus to support the successful travel of their egg during the drop. Students created presentations using the data they collected during the process and have scheduled an engineer to come speak to the class about their project as their public audience.

Minutes:
Valentin del Rio, principal at Bancroft Middle School spoke briefly about events occurring at his site and Project Based Learning. Over half of his teachers this year have been trained in PBL. He introduced his two vice principals, Jeff Miles, Julie Thomas, his eighth grade teacher Mr. Asper, and two eighth grade students, Catherine Alfaro and Saul Mendez.

Mr. Asper talked about his project that he has been doing over the past 17 years, "How to protect your raw egg from plummeting off the roof of your school". This is a good science project but not a PBL project. After his PBL training he incorporated what he learned and made his egg project into a PBL project. Currently in the news there is much information about traveling to Mars and space exploration. Mr. Asper's new project is now called the "Martian Egg Expedition Project". He talked about his new project and the projects his students are currently working on. Both Catherine and Saul shared and talked about their projects.
