E. PRESENTATIONS
E.1. Lincoln High School
Speaker:
Stephen Redmond, Principal
Rationale:

Stephen Redmond, Principal of Lincoln Alternative Education Center, will provide an overview of the Lincoln Program.  He will cover the academics, career pathways, and student life at Lincoln.  He will also discuss student participation in a variety of student engagement activities.

Minutes:
Stephen Redmond, Principal of Lincoln High School, addressed the Board, Cabinet and members of the audience with activities going on at that site.

He focused on three areas: Academics, Career Pathways, and what life looks like at Lincoln High School.

The following topics were addressed during this presentation:

- Currently there are 175 students in attendance at this school site; next year they're looking to increase attendance to approximately 210 students.

Students have to be at least 16 years old to attend Lincoln; 200 credits are needed to graduate from Lincoln; San Leandro High school requires 220 credits in order to graduate.

Lincoln High School provides a smaller environment for students who may feel overwhelmed in a larger high school setting
- Benefits of attending Lincoln include
- smaller school population
- smaller staff to student ratio
- flexible schedule (some students work in the morning and afternoon)
- differentiated instruction based on student needs
- Opportunity to gain credits obtained through direct instruction, project based learning, online curriculum and work credit

Principal Redmond expressed excitement this school year about the Career Pathways program. The pathways provide a wonderful opportunity for our students to transition from high school into adulthood.

Principal Redmond discussed the 10 year plan for Lincoln students and its goals. This plan ideally begins in students' freshman year, continuing through college, and 2 years after. Students attending Lincoln have usually surpassed their freshman year, but they follow the process to make goals to know how they can prepare now in order to achieve those goals in the future, especially in the Bay Area. The student researching jobs they like and realize the need to do more now through college or other resources to move forward.

Another component of the career pathways is the Hospitalit, Tourism and Recreation class. Lincoln is currently working with Chabot College, Laney College and Eden ROP (Regional Occupational Program). Students take a class at Lincoln and have an opportunity to pursue a career in culinary cuisine and hotel management which are careers that students can be successful in upon graduating from Lincoln.

Students participated in a field trip to Laney, which has a culinary program; this opens doors for students to have many options after high school graduation.

Through a grant provided through career pathways Lincoln High School was able to develop a partnership with Alameda County Workforce Development. This partnership supports students completing applications for internships which could potentially turn into a future career or employment upon graduation from Lincoln.

Students are participating in project based learning in the classrooms. Many students have struggled in a traditional classroom setting. Therefore, the project based learning assignments provide an opportunity for students to explore projects and enjoy the process in their current environment.

Principal Redmond stated they are able to have presentations which benefit the students. A parent of one of the students, who is a financial planner, came to the school and gave a presentation to the economics class. She emphasized the need for to pay yourself first upon receiving your paycheck. This stood out to several in the classroom as a way to prepare for their future.

Building and trades Internship provided through the Chamber of commerce and other resources provide opportunities for students after graduation.

Principal Redmond noted that while students are taking care of business through their academics, they also have a soccer team. Students enjoyed the extra curricula activity provided at this school site.

Another benefit of the career pathways grant was to provide students an opportunity to work in a focus group which worked to develop an app to aid students on how to access programs to help them post graduation; this will not only benefit current students but aid more students within Alameda County in the future. It also provided students with a monetary stipend upon completion of the focus group.

Goals for students are to graduation and to fill the educational gaps. He also emphasized setting students on the path to career success, build relationships and positive interactions with adults and to develop confidence, not just academically but also socially.

Another activity provided at Lincoln is Personal Training Certification which would motivate certain

Principal Redmond provided current statistics for Lincoln, which noted 104 students were on track to graduate and 7 students returned to San Leandro High School during Spring Semester.

Future goals for Lincoln include more career pathways, early childhood education, continued collaboration with Chabot College, Laney College and Eden Area ROP as well as taking advantage of some of the programs at our Adult School. Another goal is to provide a personal training certification program for athletes who are have shown interest in pursuing this as a career.

E.3. San Leandro Adult School
Speaker:
Bradley Frazier, Principal
Rationale:

The Adult School continues to provide educational programs and services that meet the needs of our community.  This presentation will give a brief overview of our programs and partnerships followed by two students sharing their success stories.

Minutes:
Bradley Frazier, Principal of San Leandro Adult School, introduced his Assistant Principal, Rachelle Parham, who aids him immensely at their school site.

He then went on to present a brief overview of activities and events taking place at the adult school.

Adult education consists of transition, and the adult school has to prove their worth to the feds and the state since that is where the majority of funding for the adult school comes from. One way they do this is by transitioning students from one program to another; other ways include graduation, earning a diploma or GED, going on to college, becoming employed or retaining current employment. The adult schools works diligently to increase their benchmarks and work with students to ensure they are achieving their goals. Principal Frazier stated that in order to aid the students in transitioning, the site practices the four P's:
- prepare -
- progress (state testing, federal testing and local testing)
- perform
- promote

Current partners include via the new Transition Center:
Alameda County Workforce Investment Board
Davis Street
Chabot College
Kaiser Permanente
Cal Fresh
Eden Council for Hope and Opportunity
Benefitscal.com

He stated that enrollment is increasing and due the good economy more students are getting jobs. There's also an increase in adult school students enrolling in community college. Because of the adult school's partnership with Kaiser, Davis Street and several others, the adult school is able to provide on site social services and resources.

Principal Frazier acknowledged his Assistant Principal, Rachelle Parham, in organizing a successful Career-Technical Open House and the Transitional Center Open House. Adult School is currently offering resume writing, interview workshops and other workshops through the Student Transition Center to help students.

He noted several activities and events to aid in transitions and education, which included
- Echo Housing
- Kaiser Flu Shot Clinics
- Kaiser - Free Health Insurance for Undocumented Children
- FBI - Cyber Security Presentation

Mr. Frazier brought along two students, one former and one current, to share their experiences at the adult school and how the adult school aided them in their transitions.Ahmed Alkubaisi and Karina Cibrian. Both students briefly shared their experiences

Ahmed: He greeted the audience and Board members and stated that and he's from Iraq and came to the United States in 2013 and could only speak a few words of English; he has no family and lives alone. He enrolled at the adult school in August 2015 after being hospitalized for 1.5 years. His goals when enrolling at the adult school were to learn English, earn his GED and enroll in the Pharmacy Technician Certification Program. The classes he's currently in are preparing him to complete and pass the GED test. He's learned English within the past 2 years. Now he's mobile in the community and has American friends that he enjoys a variety of activities with. Currently, his favorite sport is body building. He is now employable; his first job was a computer job coach helping individuals with disabilities find employment. He is currently working as a customer service representative in San Leandro and is happy in his work. He enjoys the adult school and happy to attend because he learns something new every day and practice his communication skills. He enjoys his classmates and listening to their experiences. He participates in various activities locally including Beautification Day and the Chabot College Tour and enjoys the adult school's Appreciation Day. He recommends the Adult School to everyone because we learn.

Karina: She was born in Tijuana Baja California - she is the second of four siblings and immigrated to the united states in when she was 12 years old. She had to adapt to a different culture and language. While she found it challenging, she was excited to know she would be able to make her dreams come true. As a little girl her dream was to become a nurse. As years passed she learned to do many things on her own, but was unable to finish high school. Her father had to return to Mexico which meant Karina worked part time and took care of younger siblings. She was never ok with leaving school because it meant she was leaving her dreams behind her. Karina is the mother of four children and at times it has seemed impossible for her to attend school and balance family life. In 2013, Karina had a talk with her family and asked for their support. She decided to take a risk. She enrolled in San Leandro Adult School to earn the 75 credits needed for her to complete high school. All of the hard work and dedication paid off. On June 11, 2013, Karina graduated, received her diploma and was the recipient of the San Leandro Adult School Certificated Nurse's Assistant Training Program Scholarship. Last week Karina completed the Nurse's Training Program and takes her Certification exam June 21. Karina is pursuing her dream. Her next goal is to prepare for the Adult School's LVN program. Her ultimate goal is to become a Registered Nurse. Karina is motivated, believes in herself, has the support of her family and staff at the Adult School. She will continue working to make her dream a reality.

Principal Frazier concluded his presentation by reiterating that it's all about transition.
