Ms. Erica Viray Santos, teacher and coordinator of the Social Justice Academy at San Leandro High School, spoke about the student campaign that was developed since last year and decided to run a campaign surrounding "Restorative Justice". Students wanted to build and continue to strengthen relationships between adults and students. Students discovered that many teachers were supportive of their campaign and wanted to know more about Restorative Justice and how to implement it in their classrooms. The Social Justice Academy students were there to ask and encourage the District to provide money for professional development for our staff surrounding Restorative Justice and Restorative Practices, and possibly hire a Restorative Justice Coordinator or facilitator for our District. Students visited the middle schools and at their own campus conducted workshops on Restorative Circles and Restorative Theater which has been very effective.
The following students from the Social Justice Academy also spoke regarding their campaign "Restorative Justice": Isaiah Walker, Preston Cook, Brennon Dyer, Jaquelin Hernandes, Kunta Gary, Adis Tabakovic, Alejandro Fabian, Dahlahnee Robinson, Marian and Jose Zarate.

* On March 21st, 503 juniors participated in taking SAT's. Last year only 120 students participated in taking SAT's which were taken on a Saturday.
* Career Day was a huge success. On March 29th, in collaboration with our African American business association and the City of San Leandro Commerce came together to support our students. Over 80 professionals came to support our students and motivate them. New to Career Day this year, 130 students participated in mock interviews. Students interviewed the professionals by asking them the following questions; "how to respond to questions during an interview, how to prepare for an interview and how to be interview ready".
* 82% of the students took the youth survey, 55% of the staff participated and 265 families also responded to the survey. Results from the survey will be reviewed.
* Trades Day field trip is approaching for the CTE program. Students will be visiting five different local trade businesses and eighty students will be participating in this field trip.

The College Board will present a national recognition to the San Leandro Unified School District for their exceptional progress in the implementation of Advanced Placement programs at San Leandro High School. The district is being recognized for its expansion of AP course offerings, number of students enrolled in AP courses, and student success rate on AP exams, particularly for students who have been historically underrepresented in AP courses. |
| |
| James Montoya, secretary of the corporation for the College Board of New York began his presentation by giving a brief introduction of himself and his ties to the bay area. He also introduced his College Board colleagues that were present with him tonight. He explained why they were there and why this award is so important. He stated "You are one of three winners nationally and one out of 14,000 school districts in the United States." They wanted to be here to celebrate with the District this National honor. Mr. Montoya provided impressive statistics on the AP program at San Leandro High School; a 10% growth in the number of students taking AP exams, 64% of students scored a three or better which represented a 9% gain. That gain was higher among African Americans, Hispanics, Latinos and Native American students who had scores of three or higher, an increase of 10%. He presented the Board with the "AP District of the Year" award and congratulated them on this prestigious honor. |
|
|
| Trustee Oshinski read correspondence received since the last Board meeting. |
|
|
Student Board member Liz Toledo began her report with suggestions she received from staff and students:
* There is concern regarding the safety of the school community, given that they were recently on a lock down. Staff is suggesting that cameras be working at all times and routine service be done.
* The HEAT program from the Barbara Lee Center provided mental health resource cards and many of the staff have made these cards available to students. Liz Toledo suggested that these cards could also be made available to all students, all incoming freshmen for next school year and districtwide.
* Provide additional mental health posters at school to help promote the assistance of guidance counselors.
* The high school has shown a great amount of strength and they have become a closer community. The Social Justice Academy Restorative Revamp has helped with this. Welcoming students to the new school year with this type of activity can help build a foundation of trust and understanding.
* There are some students who disagree with the new AP exam rule. They are concerned about coming back to school after taking this exam.
* E Books are a great idea since technology is always advancing. Mr. Tomlin, from the San Leandro High School library, approached Ms. Toledo regarding a partnership between the library and leadership, to further promote the use of E Books during pep rallies and during lunch time activities.
* Students and staff felt very accomplished when they heard the news about the College Board event. Liz Toledo feels that they should celebrate their school, their achievement and overall the entire district. They should also continue to promote student enrollment in AP classes and college readiness for all students.
* The cafeteria naming contest is in the final stages. Two names have been forwarded to the Food & Nutritional Services department who will select the final name for the cafeteria.
* Liz Toledo and her colleagues plan to discuss the community garden with staff members and hopefully have it revolve around Earth Day on April 22nd. |

|

Teachers collaborating with administrators and the school board collaborating with the community. He talked about the great news on the AP award and stated "we need to be proud of this award". He recognized teachers, counselors K through 12, the administration and the entire school community for their hard work. He also stated “we need to continue to focus on retention, recruitment and fair salaries”. He also spoke about Staff Development Day and the Wellness Fair and how both the district and SLTA had worked together on these two events.

The district has contracted with School Works, Inc. to provide an updated demographic study. The district last’s study was completed in December 2015.
The updated study includes projected growth from several residential development projects within district boundaries. The study's 6-year projection (2023-24) estimates an increase of about 200 students at the K-5 level, flat enrollment for middle schools, and an increase of about 200 students at the high school level (page 42).
As we have seen with the 2015 study, there are a number of variables that may lead to higher or lower enrollment than the study’s projections. These include economic and political issues that impact timing of construction of upcoming residential development, and trends associated with interdistrict enrollment permits.
|
| |
Staff is recommending that Governing Board accept the updated study.

The attached Form J-13A represents the school district's application to the California Department of Education to exclude March 15, 2018 attendance for San Leandro High School from the district's annual calculation of Average Daily Attendance. Single day ADA for SLHS represents about $200,000 in revenue.
Form J-13A does not technically need to be approved at a board meeting, however it must be signed by a majority of trustees before being forwarded to the County Office of Education and then on to the state. For reasons of transparency and record keeping, staff is recommending approval of the attached Form J-13A.

SLUSD entered into an agreement with American Logistics Company (ALC) and First Student in June 2016 to provide transportation services to special education students within the district. As of this year, First Student is servicing the majority of our transportation needs via school busses within the district, while ALC is is providing transportation via car service primarily to destinations outside of the district. Our transportation model is working well this year. We have had very few disruptions or complaints, and the cost has decreased from last year.
ALC has provided a contract addendum that would allow for the use of "high capacity vehicles" to transport students, with all other charges and terms remaining unchanged. High capacity vehicles would cost $85 per trip, versus $65 per trip for a car. However, the use of high capacity vehicles could save money by allowing ALC to also pickup students from Castro Valley USD and San Lorenzo USD. Multi-district pick-ups would be be subject to approval by SLUSD staff.

The regulations of the Williams lawsuit settlement require school districts to complete “Quarterly Complaint” reports that document the number of complaints for textbooks and instructional materials, teacher vacancies and mis-assignments, and facilities conditions. Additionally, effective January 2008, as a result of settlement with the California State Department of Education, districts are required to implement the Valenzuela Settlement Legislation (Assembly Bill 347). Notification regarding the complaint process is integrated into the Williams Complaint form which is posted in every secondary classroom as required. For the period of July - September 2017 the District did not have any complaints. Also, the District did not have any complaints for the period January - March, 2018.
