A. CALL TO ORDER - 6:00 P.M.
Minutes:

B. PUBLIC TESTIMONY - CLOSED SESSION ITEMS
Minutes:
Tom Morse announced that he was excited about going back to the bargaining table next week for their annual visit with the district negotiators. They will be presenting numerous proposals, some economic and also focusing on clearing up caseloads and support for students in the Special Services department.

Mr. Morse introduced Shelby Whittington, Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) for the district. Ms. Whittington spoke about communication and how communication does not come easy to the students they serve. She was there representing the district's Speech and Language Pathologist and asked that the district develop a policy that defines manageable caseload numbers. Ms. Whittington talked about their job responsibilities and stated that they are not able to provide the services that students need due to the caseloads they currently have.

Tom Morse introduced Amy Taxdahl, one of the district's school nurses. Ms. Taxdahl announced that she was one of three credentialed nurses for the district. She was there to talk about increasing the nursing staff which will improve the health, safety and academic success of students. Over the years student population has increased and so has their caseloads. Their ratio is one nurse to every 3,000 students. Due to their caseloads they are only addressing the highest priorities. She talked about their job duties and the limited services they are able to provide to students. Ms. Taxdahl stated that having more nurses would enable them to provide additional services to students.

Mr. Morse introduced Doreet Stein, School Psychologist for the district. Ms. Stein started working for the district in 1999 and is one of seven psychologists who serve over 9,000 students. Ms. Stein stated that over the past few years she is no longer able to provide services needed due to her increased caseload which is the case for most psychologists. Student population is increasing at each site and more support is needed. There has also been an increase of assessments required. Ms. Stein spoke about their current job duties and stated they need support in order to provide services to students. She asked the Board to maximize their time at each site and to work with them to assure that psychologists are able to work with the recommended student caseload.

Tom Morse stated that Oakland and Hayward school districts have language in their contracts regarding psychologists, speech and language pathologists and nurses and have more language in their contracts than we do. He stated that the good news is that our district has COLA, growth and a parcel tax and we can set priorities to serve our students. Tom also stated that they will be making a couple of proposals about class size while still making San Leandro the best place to teach for all of their teachers. He looks forward to being at the bargaining table with the district's team next week.

J. PRESENTATIONS
J.1. Youth Leadership Council Presentation
Minutes:
Ms. Sonal Patel, Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services and Keziah Moss, Director of Community & Employee Engagement, worked with the Youth Leadership Council to engage in the LCAP process to get feedback and suggestions on how to improve their services as aligned with their strategic plan and the mission of the local control accountability plan. They had five meetings and met from December through May. Students met with several directors and also with district staff working at the site level to learn about the strategic plan and to get their input on what is working at their sites. Ms. Patel stated that this presentation will be taken under advisement as they build their LCAP.

Ms. Moss introduced the Youth Leadership Council students. Jessica Tsubamoto, an eighth grader from John Muir spoke about their first Youth Leadership Council meeting that focused on Safety and Security. They learned about the Safety Response program and then conducted a school wide peer survey at John Muir. The results from the survey indicated students feel safe since the security cameras have been installed but still fell uncertain as to what to do in an emergency. The Council decide that the best solution was to have more emergency drills that students were unaware of. Jessica stated that she had heard from her peers that the crossing between San Leandro High School and FTK has become more efficient.

Amiri Taylor, a junior at San Leandro High School, spoke about facilities and student's feedback. Hydration stations are working and students would like to have more hydration stations available to them. Middle and elementary schools students like the new libraries. The San Leandro High School cafeteria has a more inviting atmosphere. Suggestions received were maintaining the campus and custodial support and updating outdoor areas.

Alejandra Kleineidam, a junior at San Leandro High School, talked about Prevention and Intervention. She spoke about the different ways students are being recognized and how appreciative they are of the recognition they receive. The Barbara Lee Center provides after school activities to students. The addition of Muir Moments and Bronco Time at the middle schools provides a comfortable forum for students, where they are able to ask and share opinions on important topics outside of school. Improvement needed is for all schools providing positive feedback not to promise incentives that are inconsistent and often confusing. Schools provide various resources to students but due to lack of publicity students do not have the knowledge to access these services and ongoing communication is needed.

Elizabeth Thomas, a freshman at San Leandro High School, talked about Food Service and free breakfast that is served at all schools. This is a great program for students to start their day. The quality of food, reduced packaging, increased access and variety of food has improved. Suggestions made were variable portion size, dietary restriction options and continued menu variety.

Elizabeth Thomas also spoke about College and Career. Students at San Leandro High School are able explore careers that require a college education but they would also like to see more focus on vocational options. All freshman take the College and Career course alongside health and safety. This is a great program to help guide students navigate for the next 10 years, but the information received from teacher to teacher is inconsistent. They would like to see this course unified and strengthened to improve it. This course is articulated with Chabot College and is a great way to introduce students to a community college. Many students do not know that they can take community college courses alongside high school classes. There are more internships available to students and they seem to know about them. They would like to see more life skills provided to students. Tours being offered at the beginning of the school year and the semester are very informative to students. Counseling is provided at the beginning of the school year to high school students but it is inconsistent and not everyone was able to see a counselor. Middle school students would also like to be included in receiving more information of services available to them.

Elizabeth Thomas talked about assessments. More multiple tests are being given for multiple subjects. She would like to see individual tests given for each subject so students do not feel overwhelmed. If assessments were offered at multiple times during the year students could be assessed on how they are improving or not approving over the course of the school year. Computerized tests are beneficial to students and allow you to go more in depth on tests. Elizabeth talked about the free PSAT and SAT testing for high school students that are needed to get into college and how amazing it is to be able to take these tests for free. Amiri Taylor talked about student's suggestions; students want immediate feedback on tests they are taking, they want to know why they are taking these test, they would like to see increased parent communication regarding these tests, and would like to see a variety of tests which would increase student's interest in testing.

Vocabulary Spelling City supports practice of spelling and vocabulary in an adaptive and game style format. NEWSELA PRO is an innovative way to build reading comprehension with nonfiction, informational text based on daily news articles.
