Dr. Sonal Patel, Assistant Superintdent, Educational Services
Dr. Sonal Patel, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, will provide an update on the feedback received from the community for new TK-12 curriculum for Social Studies-History, TK-12 Science, and grades 6-12 World Language curriculum and recommendations made to the Board Curriculum Committee on October 21.

Dr. Sonal Patel, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, provided a presentation on recommendations from the TK-12 Curriculum Adoption Adoption Committee.
Their adoption focus was on
- History/Social Science for grades, TK-5, 6-8 and 9-12*
- Science grades TK-5, 6-8 and 9-12*
- World Language grades 6-8 and 9-12
*including specialized courses and programming
It was a large focus in a short amount of time. But there was a big need. The school district's curriculum in History/Social Science, World Language and Science was outdated and not aligned to current standards, frameworks and vision as reflected in our strategic plan and graduate profile. The school district had been waiting for funding for many years.
A solution arose. The school district was able to target special one-time COVID-19 emergency funding from the state to update aging textbooks and learning materials in order to provide online access and relevant coursework for our students.
Working under a highly compressed timeline our curriculum adoption committee members and facilitators worked tirelessly on how developing rubrics, piloting lessons and synthesized feedback from peers, community and students and shared evaluations to form recommendations.
Dr. Patel acknowledged that educators are not only navigating distance learning and coping with the pandemic themselves, but they also engaged deeply in the adoption process in order to bring this committee the recommendations.
Science The committee used rubrics based on alignment with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and all rubrics for all content areas is also included.
Rubric standards included the following:
*Diversity
* inclusivity
* Accessibility
* Engagement
* Content Presentation
* Technology
* The ability of the curriculum to foster critical thinking and rigor
* The type of assessment that is grounded both formative and summative within the curriculum
The adoption committee chose:
Amplify for grades TK-5 and 6-8 -
Savvas for grades 9-12
All members of the Science Curriculum adoption committee were displayed and acknowledged for all of their hard work put in during the compressed timeline.
History/Social Science
This adoption committee developed a rubric similar to the one for the California Standards but also the California framework. They also used most rubric standards noted earlier for the science curriculum recommendations. The adoption committee chose:
Teacher's Curriculum Initiation (TCI) for grades 6-8
National Geographic (Cengage) for grades 9-12
Committee members were displayed and acknowledged for all of the efforts.
Dr. Patel provided background information for the TK-5 history and social science recommendation. The committee reviewed the publishing companies from the adoptions that were put forth by the California State Board of Education. The companies and adoptions did not meet the rubric that was developed. Upon further review the committee realized the TCI curriculum would not work for grades TK-5. The teachers in this committee decided that they wanted to create custom made units which were more closely aligned and rooted to the history and social science framework and rooted to historically responsive teaching.
The TK5 History Social Science adoption committee recommends adopting custom made units.
The units will include:
* essential questions rooted in history social science framework and touch upon the history social science standards and the social justice standards for teaching tolerance
* There are up to 5 units per grade that comprise 3-5 lessons within the unit that integrate across curriculum and project based learning
* Resources include non-fiction/fiction literature and reference tools
The TK-5 History and Social Science Adoption Committee members were displayed and acknowledged.
World Language
The adoption committee has made recommendations in three languages: Mandarin, Spanish and French.
Mandarin: Cheng & Tsui 10-4 for Mandarin Speakers
Chairman's Bao AP - supplemental
Spanish:
Vista 1-3, AP
McGraw-Hill Medical (currently in our career pathway)
Wayside - Spanish Speakers
Guerra & Savvas - Spanish Speakers supplemental
French
Savvas - AP
French 1-3 is to be determined; we will bring that recommendation to the November 10 board meeting since the publisher has filed Chapter 11 documents. We don't want to engage with a publisher that will not be able to engage in the way we need for curriculum adoption. This will provide time for the French teachers to review more curriculum to bring forward for adoption.
All World Language Curriculum Adoption committee members were displayed and acknowledged.
Next Steps
1. Complete TK-5 History-Social Studies Curriculum
2. Training on digital elements and resources
3. Collaboration to integrate curriculum, assessments
Adoption Costs for recommended curriculums were displayed.
* TK-12 Science $1,894,502
*TK-12 History Social Science $1,197,280
* 6-12 World Language $400,000
Total Estimated Costs for all adoption recommendations is $3,446,782.
Adoption Committee facilitators, materials and tech support staff were acknowledged for all of their hard work and oversight for the adoption committee recommendations.

Dr. McLaughlin asked the board to make a motion to return to in person learning on January 4 at the end of the presentation. This target date will help the teachers and support staff get prepared. This date can move as needed if it is determined that our school district is not ready for in person learning. Updates will be provided as the school district moves toward that date or the Alameda County Health Department guidelines change.
Next Steps In addition to setting a target date, updates will be provided at every board meeting and adding more board meetings as needed to inform the community on a consistent basis of where we're at and where we are going.

The 2020 TK-12 History Social Science Curriculum adoption process began in early August 2020. The committee, composed of TK-12 teachers, administrators and specialists from across the district, engaged in a three month digital and print instructional materials review process to meet the demands of the California History Social Science Framework and California History Social Science Standards. Committee members developed an evaluation tool and rubric to conduct a preliminary materials review of multiple publishers, narrowing down to two to conduct a full materials review and pilot. After each program review, committee members completed the rubric to analyze each program, engaged in committee debrief sessions, and gave feedback on the final recommendation report that was presented for the to the Board Curriculum Committee (BCC) on October 21, 2020. The TK-5 committee elected to review Teacher’s Curriculum Institute (TCI) and a collection of curated materials, while the 6-12 Committee elected to do a review with TCI and National Geographic Learning-Cengage (Nat Geo). The analysis of each committee’s process and experience is attached in the final report.
