  10. 8 Secondary Redesign Board Work Study Session
    Speaker
    Rosanna Mucetti
    Rationale
The San Leandro Unified School District launched the Secondary Redesign Committee in the spring of 2015 to discuss ways to improve its secondary programming that align to the demands of the new state standards, technology integration, and shifts in pedagogy that support deeper learning and personalization in grades 6-12. The committee has worked over the course of six sessions to consider adjustments to the current secondary program model at our middle schools, high school, and alternative education center. The following conceptual questions guided the work of the committee: What type of instructional schedule best supports the 21st century teaching and learning our students need us to implement? How can SLUSD provide personalized learning pathways that differentiate the various ways in which students can meet their college and career goals? What are the structures necessary for a personalized learning environment in large middle schools, a large comprehensive high school, and an alternative education center? What are the systems necessary for intervening early and quickly for students who are not prepared academically and socio-emotionally to enter the next educational level? What design could be implemented in order to ensure access to rigorous, real world learning via career pathways and career exposure opportunities? The committee focused on three structures to redesign as part of this effort: 1) the FTK 9th grade campus model 2) instructional schedules, and 3) personalized, real world learning program components that includes career pathways, academies, advisory, mentorship, and intensive intervention. This study session will provide the Board of Education with information regarding all aspects of the work conducted thus far. The Educational Services team will present on the committee and stakeholder input process, the redesign proposals being considered, an analysis of stakeholder input data thus far, and some of the preliminary recommendations being proposed by staff. A follow up presentation will be delivered on January 12, 2016 that will further inform the Board of Education as they take action on the proposed recommendations and the associated timeline for implementation.
    Minutes
Two speakers commented on this study: Anita Waldron - Has been a teacher at Bancroft Middle School since 1982. Has experience with the block schedule in previous years. She feels the block schedule makes a positive difference in her teaching. The block days allows more time. The science teachers at the middle school are in favor of block schedule. It's about what is good for the kids. Let's move forward and make changes. We are a district on the move. Jon Sherr, President of SLTA (San Leandro Teachers Association) is really excited about the secondary redesign program and the work involved in bringing this program forward. Dr. Mucetti, Deputy Superintendent, Education Services, Sonal Patel, Director, Teaching, Learning and Equity Education, and Rabinder (Rob) Mangewala, Director, Instructional Technology, Assessments, Research & Program evaluation, went into provided a work study to the Board regarding their work around the Secondary Redesign program. This included survey results, training and implementation for the teachers, how this program will help students meet their college and career goals and how best to support families with the proposed changes to their student's schedules. The Board made several inquiries regarding this program and the impact it will have on our students based on the results of the surveys and the work of the Secondary Redesign Committee.
