Aaron will provide a monthly update on Bond information |
| |
Aaron Kerrigan, Director of Facility & Operations, provided a bond update as follows:
- His department has been diligent concerning the questions and concerns regarding the high school pool. Test results came back for the core samples provided to the engineers. The cement is stable. The erosion is due to the chemicals. This created more questions since the chemicals are delivered to the pool via an automated process. It was determined that the chemical erosion can be caused by many factors including over exposure to sunlight, how much water is in the splash zone, etc. His department is working to determine a solution to this problem. Will report more solutions in future meetings.
- High School cafeteria was renovated during the President's Week break.
- Libraries - so close to completion. Items damaged in transit is delaying completion. Librarians are being training for Maker Space and the 3D printers
- His department is preparing for the upcoming bus tour

| Jarrett Hansen |
Jarrett Hansen, San Leandro High School Marching Band Director, will offer a presentation regarding the selection and purchase of SLHS marching band uniforms.
|
| |
Jarrett Hansen, Marching Band Director, provided an update on marching band uniforms.
Before giving his presentation, a student began playing the drums entered the chambers and walked to the podium as a way of introductions. The student was wearing the uniform that the school district in interested in purchasing.
Mr. Hansen then provided information pertaining to purchasing uniforms for the band.
He's reviewed uniforms from 8-10 companies and narrowed it down to 2. One had a more modern design and the other was a more traditional design. The students voted; 85% chose the one the model student was wearing. Presented the uniform to the Cabinet, who were also impressed.
Mr. Hansen stated that marching band uniforms are expensive. The costs of the uniforms will be $140,000, which includes the uniform racks and storage for the uniforms. Quality of the material is better and will last for 25 years. We plan to purchase 250 uniforms. Cuffs and pants are adjustable to allow for growth and height as needed.

Susan Levenson, Watershed Awareness Coordinator, Friends of San Leandro Creek, provided an overview of the Creek Video Project Presentation.
In addition to Susan several people introduced pertaining to this project: Michael Gregory, Maureen Fiorney, retired teacher and volunteer, and Jeromey Shafer of San Leandro Education Foundation (SLED).
The goal of this presentation is to utilize Friends of the San Leandro Creek to provide project based learning at the elementary school sites. So they are looking at ways to bring a passion for the creeks to our students. Students will participate in a Friends of San Leandro Creek video contest. They've done research as to how to judge to videos in accordance to the project based learning.
Susan is excited to partner with the school district. This is how we grow our students to care for our community. Field trips are provided to school sites - they can come to the creek or the Watershed staff can come to the school, free of charge.
A teacher from Roosevelt took her class to the creek as a field trip. All that is needed is a cell phone to prepare a video. A pilot program will be set up with McKinley this year. Former video contest winners were displayed. Certificates were provided to winners.

Currently, our district is required to complete an Other Post Employment Benefits (OPEB) study every two years. The study is required by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). The study represents an estimate of the total cost that the district will pay for health benefits for retirees. Because of agreements reached in the 1980's and 1990's that limited retiree health contributions, the Actuarial Accrued Liability (AAL) is decreasing over time. The current study shows an AAL of about $5.9 million, a decrease from $6.3 million in the 2016 study. Pages with names and birthdates of retirees have been removed from the study for privacy reasons.

Due to increased enrollment this school year and the challenges presented, the Educational Services Division is proposing a change to Administrative Review (AR) 5117. San Leandro High School, in response to GOAL #2 Equity and Inclusion through College and Career Readiness, will offer free PSAT and SAT administration to all sophomores and juniors during the 2017-2018 school year. This initiative supports creating more equitable outcomes for all students as the district aims to create more support for increasing college readiness. The SAT is an admission test accepted by all US colleges and taking the test is typically a requirement for college admissions. In addition, the College Board has programs such as free information about admission and financial aid from colleges, universities, and scholarship programs that our SLHS students can take advantage of when they sign up and take both the PSAT and SAT.

AEC rental rates were increased this past July 1 for the first time since originally approved in 2012. Theater Manager Dustin Brown reports that the increased rates have not negatively impacted demand for the theater, and have resulted in more efficient use of theater time. All theater rental revenue is used to offset costs associated with operating and maintaining the theater. Theater lease revenue has averaged about $85,000 per year over the past four years. SLUSD schools and programs are not charged for theater use. Similar to what was approved last year for other district facility rental rates, staff is proposing that the Governing Board approve ongoing annual rental rate increases effective July 1 each year. The increases would be based on the Consumer Price Index for San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose (CPI-U – all items) for the December to December time period. The rate would be capped at a 3% maximum increase and 0% minimum increase. If approved, the attached rates would go into effect July 1, 2018, with future rates calculated and posted by February each year.

The increased fee proposal would bring in a small amount of additional revenue annually. The new revenue is offset by increased costs associated with AEC operational costs (utilities, custodial, theater maintenance, and payroll costs).
