San Leandro Adult School started in 1928 and has been serving students for 90 years. Communication is key at their site and they have their own student advisory board, transition center, many community partners and a student advisory forum. This academic year they served 2,500 to 3,000 students annually in these programs. School activities this year include two student appreciation days, Open House, Beautification Day and numerous Chabot College tours. They are also marketing their Allied Health Expo who they partner with Alameda County. Rachelle Parham, Vice Principal of the Adult School, introduced Alicia Larkin, one of their successful Career Tech Education students who earned her CNA and Home Health Aid licenses in 2018. Ms. Larkin's career goal is to become a nurse practitioner or nurse administrator. She enrolled in the San Leandro Adult School Certified Nursing Assistant in Home Health Aide training program, completed her program and received her certification. E.2 Lincoln Alternative Education Center 📎 1
- Rationale
- Thanks for giving us the chance to share our program. At Lincoln Alternative Education Center and Independent Study (LAEC), we work hard to bridge students to a successful school experience. We will share some of the many highlights that allow us to serve the needs of our students while providing them options for the future. We are proud of our students and our programs. We continue to learn what is at our CORE!
- Minutes
- Matthew Steinecke, Lincoln High School principal, began his presentation by discussing the Strategic Goals for Lincoln. Goal 1 - Teach, Learn and Achieve - Principal Steinecke spoke about the instruction, curriculum and support at Lincoln. They have partnered with ACOE (Alameda County Office of Education), Reading with Relevance curriculum and Career Pathways. Students developed a budget and found out how expensive it was to live on your own. They are using student voice to help drive their instruction. The Independent Studies program currently has over 50 students. They serve many students at both Lincoln and their Independent Studies program. They have sports and activities programs and their soccer team won first place this season and their basketball team also won 2nd place. They have also taken several field trips. 21st Century Theaters donated 50 tickets and they were able to see the movie "The Hate You Give". Students read the novel, had a discussion about it and as a school were able to take a field trip to see this movie. Goal 2 - College and Career - Students participated in the Chabot Manufacturing Day, CTE Pathways and ROP. Walmart came to their campus to discuss available jobs and to assist with resumes and the application process. Concurrent enrollment and articulation with Chabot has been very positive. Students are able to receive college credit for an articulation class at Lincoln. Social and emotional development is very important to them. Their student advisory committee asked students "What's at your CORE?" and students responded favorably to this project. Goal 3 - Collaborative Staff and Supportive District - There are six new staff members at their site. Their professional development included attending PilotCity, Project Based Learning and participating in a voter registration drive. Two of their students worked as poll workers. Goal 4 - Relationships and Community - Community partnerships include Cooking Matters, Oakland A's and the movie theater. The Food Service department provided a winter holiday luncheon for the entire school and they celebrated Dia De Los Muertos. Principal Steinecke stated that it is important that students have activities and events at Lincloln. Goal 5 - Facility and Tech Improvements - Currently the crosswalk construction is being completed. This is a partnership between the district and the city. Principle Steinecke introduced ZaeQuan Washington and Alexis Belford. Both will discuss their experiences at Lincoln and their future plans. ZaeQuan spoke about discovering ROP and Graphic Design at Linclon. He created the poster "What's At Your CORE?" and makes his own T-shirts. Through ROP he learned how to start his own business with design based values. Having had a positive experience at Lincoln, ZaeQuan now plans to attend college. ZaeQuan started Linclon in his junior year and noticed the lack of community. This year he noticed that having communication with the faculty has helped students move on and do better. Alexis Belford talked about starting Lincoln in her junior year and immediately felt the love there. She joined ROP, took Criminal Justice classes and fell in love with forensics. After taking Criminal Justice classes she has decided to join the Marines. She spoke about the staff at Lincoln being supportive and was very thankful to them and especially to Mr. Steinecke. Principal Steinecke introduced Phillip Abreu as their volunteer of the year and spoke about his support throughout the many years with school-wide events, helping to BBQ and does whatever he can to support the school. Mr. Abreu was presented with the volunteer of the year award.
