Hello James Monroe Community,

This is principal McNeil with an update.

Every Friday morning we are serving coffee starting at 7:45 in the MPR. It is first come first served, until it runs out. We encourage you to get to school early to get your coffee.

Thanks to everyone selling chocolate! This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and it is looking good this year. We still have a few boxes left if you need more! Chocolate sales end Oct. 23rd. All money is due to school the following Monday. Thank you!!

School Smarts:
We have School Smarts the next three Thursdays, 10/22, and 10/29, 8:15 in the Parent Room.

Great Shakeout:
Every year on the anniversary of the 1989 Bay Area earthquake, we have a statewide earthquake drill. We will have our drill today, Thursday, Oct. 15, at 10:30am. This is just a drill, where we practice earthquake procedures and evacuation.

Hispanic/Latino Heritage Celebration, Friday, Oct. 23rd, in the MPR:
All are welcome to join our celebration Friday, Oct. 23rd, at 6pm in the MPR. We will be celebrating the beautiful and rich Hispanic/Latino culture and heritage. There will be food, music, performances, a fashion show, and cultural displays. Please plan to attend if possible! Wear your traditional Hispanic/Latino outfits! Dress festive and be ready to have a wonderful evening!

Fall Festival and Halloween:
Fall Festival will be during the morning of Friday, Oct. 30th. Parents with volunteer clearance are welcome and encouraged to volunteer for this event. We also have a preparation session on Wednesday, Oct. 28th from 5-7pm at Monroe, to help get ready for Fall Festival (No volunteer clearance needed.) Please join us if you can! Pizza will be served to all volunteers!

Our Halloween Parade will start at 1:05pm on Oct. 30th. We will walk around the block in our costumes. Full masks and fake weapons will be confiscated and stored in the office.
TK and K students may wear their costumes to school. 1st-5th Graders need to bring their costumes in a bag with their name marked on it. If your child needs a Halloween Costume, We Can Help!!
Reach out to Ms. J or Ms. Watkins for assistance with a Halloween Costume.

Day of the Dead, Nov. 2nd:
We will have a Community Altar for El Dia de Los Muertos. This is a special Mexican holiday to celebrate important ancestors, and those important
We ask that you send copies of photos or other items to share on our altar. Do not send anything that is too precious. Photos of people and/or items and pets are the best option. Bring or send your photos and items to Ms J anytime. We will add them to our Community Altar as we put it up for display in the MPR. We also plan to have "conchas," Bread of the Dead, for our students on Monday, Nov. 2nd.

SPED Social, Nov. 12, 6pm in the MPR:
We will have a dinner and social hour for families with students with IEP's (students in Special Education.) We will provide dinner and childcare on this special evening dedicated to our SPED families. There are different joys and challenges that come with having students who have IEP's, or special needs. Come have dinner with us while your children spend time with their paras playing in a classroom. We hope you will join us if your child has an IEP, or if you would like to support our SPED families.

Family/Teacher Conferences:
Every student in K-5th Grade will have a Family/Teacher Conference (TK has already had conferences) in November.
Nov. 12-20th will be early dismissal days for 4th and 5th Graders. Students will be dismissed at 12:50 for conferences.
Nov. 16-20th will be early dismissal days for K-3rd Graders. Students will be dismissed at 12:50 for conferences.

Please mark your calendars early for these extra early dismissal days in November. Students who are in Boys and Girls Club will not be impacted by this schedule change. Boys and Girls club will be ready to receive kids at 12:50 during this time period.

Please remember not to park in our neighbor's driveways or block their driveways at all. They will be calling the police or the tow companies to come and tow cars if they continue to have that problem. The school will continue to try to resolve any issues with our neighbors as best we can through additional communication! Thanks for your attention to this matter!

This is a wonderful time of year and we are so happy to be working with you and your children. It is a joy everyday to see the smiles on our students faces, and see the progress in their academic work!

Have a great week, and weekend.

Love,
principal McNeil
