    Rationale
The Educational Services staff has reviewed and revised Administrative Regulation (AR) 5121 - Grades/Evaluation of Student Achievement to reflect current grading standards. Instructional Coach Gaia Pine will provide an in-depth look at this work.
    Minutes
Dr. Sonal Patel, Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services and Gaia Pine, Instructional Coach, provided a robust presentation on Grading for Equity and Administrative Regulation 5121, Grades and Evaluation of Student Achievement. Background - several years ago a call to action was made on behalf of the Board, Leadership staff and community to review the D & F rate and ensure that students were able to access the most rigorous coursework along with the supports needed to successfully pass. Leadership staff has engaged in an initiative around learning what affects grading. Training for teachers and administrators was provided through Joe Feldman and The Crescendo Education group and in-house through instructional coach support. Most teachers at the secondary sites have been trained; teachers have responded well to the training. It has assisted in building a strong foundation in addressing grading inequity in the school district. This will ensure that grades accurately reflect student achievement. This work led to updating Administrative Regulation (AR) 5121. The update provided the following discoveries: *Significant differences in grading practices - teachers did not receive training on how to grade * Grade deflation factors and its affects on students, which affects student supports; their academic grade based on these findings can skew the grade and misrepresent the student's true academic understanding such as: -- points off for late work -- points off for not providing homework or materials Report card grades need to reflect their level of understanding. The teachers discovered through training the tools needed to provide that feedback. The training has helped to build authentic professional understanding on which grading practices are most accurate, bias-resistant and motivate continued learning. Teachers who engaged in training have noticed positive changes in their grading for equity and students are responding well to the new way of grading. Grading inequities were reviewed with the current grading scale, the inequities and how it negatively and inaccurately affects the students. Teachers discovered that automatic averaging is an accurate grading practice. The AR revision included making the F grade the same percentage of 50-59% or grade everything on the rubric. The rubric divides the ranges equally for all letter grades. Both options are readily available and compatible to Aeries gradebook. Next steps include training in March for administrators, training for cohorts or teachers who are new or were not trained previously, and provide guidance on using the "Incomplete" option in our AR and the AR updates. Ed. Services coaching support will be provided to departments, grade levels and schools ready to collaborate on creating cohesion in syllabi and approaches to grading. Also, informational sessions for families will be provide and we’ll explore how this work translates into alternative education settings.

Approve transfer of Macbook expenditure from Measure J1 to ESSER funds.

    Rationale
Our district purchased 700 MacBooks last summer to better equip teachers and other staff for distance learning during 2020-21. The MacBooks, support, licenses, and cases were purchased using Measure J1 technology funds. The total expenditure was $1,036,254.54. All MacBooks and cases were received and paid for during the current fiscal year. The district now expects to receive $1,223,887 this year in Elementary and Secondary School Relief Funds (ESSER). The expenditure of funds for computers for distance learning is an allowable under ESSER rules. ESSER funds must be spent by June 30, 2022 and we expect additional federal and state funds to be received to further support learning loss. District staff is proposing to move the full expenditure of $1,036,254.54 from Measure J1 technology funds to ESSER funds.
