Remembering Dolores Huerta Today

1930-2026

Dear Madison Families,

Today, we honor the extraordinary life and legacy of Dolores Huerta, a woman whose courage, leadership, and unwavering commitment to justice changed our nation.

For more than seven decades, Dolores Huerta stood alongside workers, families, women, immigrants, and communities whose voices were too often overlooked. As a cofounder of the United Farm Workers, she helped organize farmworkers to demand fair wages, safer working conditions, dignity, and respect. Her leadership reminded the world that meaningful change is possible when ordinary people come together and believe in their collective power.

Her words, “Sí, se puede,” became much more than a slogan. They became a declaration of hope. Yes, it is possible. Yes, our voices matter. Yes, we have the power to make our communities more just, compassionate, and humane.

Dolores Huerta also showed generations of young people that leadership does not always begin with a title. It begins with the courage to speak up, stand beside others, and keep working for what is right, even when the work is difficult.

At James Madison Elementary, we work every day to teach our students respect, dignity, empathy, determination, and educational equity; her life offers a powerful example of those values in action.

As we remember Dolores Huerta, let us also remember the responsibility she placed on all of us. To care for one another. To use our voices. To stand against injustice. To believe that we can build something better together.

Her work lives on in every person who chooses service over silence, courage over comfort, and community over self.

May we honor her life not only by remembering what she accomplished, but by continuing the work she believed was possible.

Sí, se puede.

With respect and remembrance,

Principal Smith
