O.2.a Approve Application to Apply for County-District-School Code for District Independent Study Program with Name "San Leandro Virtual Academy" Passed 📎 1
Recommended motion
Approve CDS Application to CDE for district independent study program with the name San Leandro Virtual Academy.
- Rationale
- Our district has operated a small independent study program for many years under the leadership of the Alternative Education Principal. The majority of students who attended the program were high school aged. The program did not operate in 2020-21 due to all schools opening under distance learning. The district independent study program did not have a "County-District-School" or "CDS" number, so was not a recognized school by the California Department of Education. Because of that, students attending the program were technically enrolled in their home school (SLHS) and were subject to the SLHS graduation requirements. With new state rules around independent study, and significantly more students enrolled in the program at all grade levels, the district is seeking authorization to apply for a CDS number to formalize the status of the program beginning in August 2022. With a CDS application, the district must submit a formal name for the program. Following Board Policy for naming schools, the Superintendent has proposed the name "San Leandro Virtual Academy". The Communications and Advocacy Committee reviewed the name at the September 7 meeting and forwarded it to the Board for consideration. While the majority of the educational program for independent study students will take place via remote learning, there will be opportunities for students to attend school in-person for reasons such as to meet with teachers, receive additional services, or participate in athletics programs.
