- Mark Hamilton, District Counselor and candidate for President of the San Leandro Teachers' Association, addressed the Board regarding his candidacy platform, and suggesting that the Board explore the ripple effects of cuts to student support services such as inadequate staffing of nurses, librarians, school psychological services, and counselors. He also commented that while the new student health center is a great addition to the District, the services offered there should supplement, not replace the full site-based services students, families, and the community deserve. Richard Chennault, John Muir Middle School PTSO President, acknowledged the District and staff for the new John Muir parking lot which has helped the traffic flow, and dropping off students. He also noted that the updated landscaping has improved the curb appeal of the school. Mr. Chennault also addressed the Board regarding math issues at John Muir, adding that not only do we need quality teachers at Muir, we need a common grading policy. Currently at Muir, the grading policy is more individualized rather then consistent from one math teacher to the other. He urged the Board and District staff to look into a District-wide grading policy so that students have consistent expectations no matter what class they are enrolled in and can accelerate and achieve success.

The Board thanked staff for the update. Comments included that it was nice to see a positive article in the paper regarding our schools connecting to the high-speed Internet fiber optic loop and hoped this would bring more students into the District. Staff also said that the work should begin this summer, with the hope of being fully connected within the next year and a half. PUBLIC COMMENT Richard Chennault, John Muir Middle School PTSO member, commended the IT staff for all of their work. Mr. Chennault would like to see the District consider forming a community interest group, serving as an advisory council, to inject new and innovative ideas so the District can continue to build on this great work the IT department is currently leading. How do you take the test if you have limited Internet capacity? Student morale after taking the practice test? SBAC testing window is at the same time as the AP testing window, which could be stressful for many of the 11th graders Consider developing a system allowing students, who do not have computers at home, to check out devices so that they can access the practice tests at home Are there paper practice tests that can be sent home?
